Wiz Khalifa - ‘Taylor Allderdice’ : Review

Wiz Khalifa does it again. Earlier tonight Wiz dropped his newest mixtape ‘Taylor Allderdice’. If you were afraid of hearing some mainstream radio tunes that ‘Rolling Papers’ was filled with, you won’t find it on this tape. He really went back to the sound that he seems most comfortable with and really propelled his explosion onto the nationwide scene. It reminds me of ‘Kush & OJ’ with the smooth, chill beats he flows on in the first half of the mixtape like on California.

California was a song he dropped back in December but nonetheless is absolute fire. It was one of the first songs he had came out with in a while compared to when he was spittin’ out tracks every week last year. It was a great first impression of the statement he was trying to make with how ‘Taylor Allderdice’ would sound compared to ‘Rolling Papers’. Definitely a must listen to track.

Guilty Conscience has a great outro that eludes to what longevity means to him and what it means to be a good rapper constantly learning; constantly relevant. He related ‘Rolling Papers’ as a learning experience much like his current music continues to be. He wrote a letter to his fans that he posted to his tumblr and said that you cannot base the entire career of a rapper on one year. Let alone writing him off because of one album. Other than the outro, this song still deserves a play on your favorites list. Its a little more up tempo in the beat with the synths and Wiz loves going hard on beat that bumps.

The latter half of the mixtape really reminds me of ‘Burn After Rolling,’ an older tape. The songs still have a chill feel to the beat and lyrics, but he’s definitely cuttin’ it up a little deeper. You can hear a great contrast between these two sounds on Number 16. It has a great chorus where Wiz sings, but he starts flowing much faster and much more intense on the verses. I also always like hearing Wiz mess around in the booth, it always is pretty fun.

Overall I think this mixtape is a success. There are a bunch of songs that can be played way more than just once and its not going to leave that annoying ring in your ear every other pop song does. Wiz Is going back to what made him blow up in the first place and its definitely a good decision. I don’t know how I feel about his collaboration with Juicy J so much recently though…

    Overall Mixtape Score- 4/5
